The primary emphasis of my research is politics, culture and nationalism in the Middle East (with special emphasize on Egypt). In this context, I have delved into the historiography surrounding the construction of the Egyptian national narrative and examined public memorial and commemoration sites (primarily monuments, such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, street statues, and the naming of streets in Cairo). I also explore various aspects of the Israeli-Arab conflict, with a stress on the relations between Israel and Egypt. What’s more, time and effort continue to be invested on researching and writing about Egyptian Jewry, particularly the documentation of communal sites

I am the Chair-person of the Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies and Diplomacy, and the past Chair-person of the Department of Middle East Studies, at Ben- Gurion University of the Negev. I am also a distinguished Visiting Professor at Northeastern University in Boston


Yoram Meital is a professor of Middle East Studies and Chairperson of the Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies & Diplomacy at Ben-Gurion University. He was a Fellow in the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard University Law School (2011-2012).
He has written on a wide assortment of research topics that pertain to Arab societies during the modern era. However, the social, cultural, political and economic developments in Egypt have captivated his attention more than any other field. His last book, Revolutionary Justice: Special Courts and the Formation of Republican Egypt, was published by Oxford University Press, 2017. Also, among his publications: Peace in Tatters: Israel, Palestine, and the Middle East (2007); Egypt's Struggle for Peace: Continuity and Change, 1967-1977 (1997). During the last thirty years he studied the history of the Jewish community and sites in Egypt. Over the course of several visits to Cairo and Alexandria, he documented the changes to various communal sites (synagogues, schools, libraries, and cemeteries) by means of photographs and written notes. These constitute rich, unique, and highly informative sources on the history of the Egyptian Jewish community. His book Jewish sites in Egypt, was published by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1995; second print 1997). An Arabic translation was published in 1996: al-Athar al-Yahudiyya fi Misr (Cairo: Dar al-Fiqr al-Hadith).
