​​​​​World Cup “fever" has the media enthralled with researchers from the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management GGFBM.

 Most recently, the BBC and The New Yorker took to research by Dr. Elia Morgulev, lecturer and PhD graduate (2017) of the GGFBM.

 In an interview on BBC, Dr. Morgulev explains from his research that must-win often means a likelihood to lose. Consequently, telling players that losing doesn't matter may be the best way to win.

Dr. Morgulev's PhD dissertation, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Bar-Eli and Prof. Ofer Azar of the GGFBM Department of Business Administration was titled Does Success Breed Success? An Empirical Examination of Momentum in Basketball. The study has far reaching implications beyond sports. Prof. Bar-Eli notes, “We're proud of Elia's success in the incomparable realm of sport management research, making it relevant not only to sports but to organizational behavior and all walks of management and psychology."

Elia's MBA research thesis dealt with deception and decision making in professional sports, published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and cited in the New York Magazine as well as the Huffington Post.

 Dr. Morgulev's post-doc research study with Prof. Yair Galily (IDC Herzliya), Choking or Delivering Under Pressure? The Case of Elimination Games in NBA Playoffs was the focus of the New Yorker article June 12, 2018: In Sports, a Must-Win Situation Usually Leads to a Loss.

Dr. Elia MorgulevDr. Morgulev sums up his many research studies in sports: “I see sports as a unique research arena that sheds light on the behavior of people who are experts in their fields in a high ecologically valid environment. The findings of such research are very relevant to business, educational and social behavior. Thus, my doctoral dissertation dealt with the issue at the heart of educational and economic management research: does success lead to success? To answer this question, we turned to sports and collected data on the performance of NBA teams." Elia is also educational director at the Yaffo-Tel-Aviv Community Center and at Yaffo's Beit Italia Youth Center and is soon to become academic head of the physical education department at Kaye College in Beer-Sheva.
