Ben-Gurion University (BGU) is a world-renowned institution of research and higher education that influences people’s lives in the Negev, throughout Israel, and around the world.

Advanced Research at the Forefront of Science and Technology

More than 800 senior and 1,100 junior faculty members work together with their graduate students in advanced laboratories, in the framework of more than 60 inter-disciplinary research centers.

In addition to pure research, Ben-Gurion University is also focused on applied research.

Through its technology transfer company, BGN Technologies, which is also responsible for the University’s patent portfolio, the University initiates, leads and implements projects with institutions, companies, and foundations worldwide, and attracts strategic partners and investors in the fields of science, technology, and industry, including homeland security; bioinformatics; robotics, energy and fuels; ergonomics; cyber security; nanotechnology; water resources; ecology and environment, human genetics; epidemiology; stem cells; diabetes; cancer; advanced drugs; biotechnology and agricultural technology; information technology and communications; environmental water treatment; and alternative energy sources.

Unprecedented Drive and Growth

The student population at Ben-Gurion University has more than doubled in the last decade. Global academic ratings place the University among the top universities in the world. In certain fields, such as Cyber Security, Desert Studies, and Nanotechnology, BGU is considered a world leader. In addition to top academics, BGU is considered the most socially vibrant among all the academic institutions in Israel.

Advanced Technologies Park - Hi-Tech and Biotechnology Park

BGU is a partner in the initiative and establishment of the Advanced Technologies Park adjacent to the Marcus Family Campus. The project is a unique public-private partnership combining the outstanding achievements of the University and the city of Beer-Sheva with leading companies. The Technologies Park is home to multinational hi-tech companies, such as Dell-EMC, Oracle, Wix, IBM, and Deutsche Telekom. They leverage the research and development prowess of BGU, alongside startups and accelerators full of BGU students and graduates.

Green Campus

A leader in environmental research in Israel, BGU is also committed to caring for the environment as part of the “Green Campus” initiative.
The University ranked 46th in the world rankings of universities with sustainable policies and operates programs to promote awareness of environmental protection, a reduction in the use of non-renewable resources, energy efficiency, promotion of research, and wide-ranging educational and community activities.

Development of the Negev and Community Involvement

Since its inception, one of the university’s primary missions has been to realize the potential of the Negev region and establish a more equitable society for its diverse residents.
BGU students and faculty bridge the gap from academia to social action on a regular basis, contributing their time and energies to the communities around them as part of their education.

More than 6000 students are involved in a wide variety of community and social projects in the region. Students work in community gardens, mentor local youth, and play active roles in their neighborhoods. For example, the “Open Apartments” program includes 80 apartments throughout Beer-Sheva in which students live and open their apartments to the community. They are placed in areas where they can do good for those in need around them, such as the elderly, the disabled, and children.
