Modern Israel Summer Program

MODERN ISRAEL

Ben-Gurion University is thrilled to offer this unique opportunity to learn to speak Hebrew or Arabic while living in Beer-Sheva, Israel, and learning about modern Israeli society.

This intensive summer course is aimed at international undergraduate and graduate students of all academic disciplines, or those who were enrolled at an academic institution within the last 5 years. The program allows you to choose between Ulpan-style (conversation-based) Hebrew or conversational Levantine Arabic courses. You'll also participate in an academic lecture series and field trips throughout Israel. Hear from experts on topics including sustainability, the innovation ecosystem, minority communities, Israeli cinema, and more.

This program will not be taking place in Summer 2024.

Sustainable Agricultural Solutions - Summer Program

Summer at the Sde Boker campus

The Sustainable Agricultural Solutions course will provide students access to cutting-edge knowledge and technologies related to agricultural practices while living and learning on our Sde-Boker campus.

This unique summer course is built with the integrated academic perspective of improving food and water use worldwide, in the face of global climate changes.

The course offers the opportunity to explore a combination of both basic and applied research in agricultural and environmental topics during frontal lessons, practical aspects of the topics, and integration between them.

The course is composed of three tracks: soil and irrigation; plants under abiotic stress; and aquaculture. The combination of field and laboratory work will provide hands-on experiences that will be presented by the students in a concluding seminar.

The program includes cultural events during which students will have the opportunity to socialize with local students and weekly tours to discover Israeli culture and history.

This course is open to registered B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. students.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The cost of the course is $2000, which includes accommodation, meals, transportation from/to the airport, and tuition. Applicants may apply for scholarships:

Full funding: award of $1700. A non-refundable $300 tuition cost will be paid by the participant.

Half funding: award of $1000.

Partial funding: award of $500.

Accommodations:

The students will be accommodated in our high-quality accommodations (with kitchenettes and bathrooms) upon receipt of a $200 refundable deposit.

Archaeological Dig

Join an active excavation site for a once-in-a-lifetime archaeological dig experience!

Archaeology is not just Indiana Jones movies and National Geographic tv shows! Come experience it for yourself and be part of the quest to understand past societies that once roamed the Negev desert.

Participants will take part in the Nahal Zahal field school, obtaining the basics of archaeological fieldwork – both excavating and recording – and participating in on-site lectures.

About the Excavation Site

The site of Nahal Zahal is a unique archaeological site, dating to the Early phase of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (10^th Millennia BC). Salvage excavations exposed a large, round structure and intriguing material culture, that includes flint and groundstone tools, animal bones, special finds, and even unique symbolic artifacts. These tell us that the site was most probably seasonally inhabited by local hunter-gatherer populations, who exploited the local environment for food as well as other resources and raw materials.

The Pre-Pottery Neolithic period represents an important phase in the prehistory of humankind: It is during that period that populations in the Levant shifted from food procurement, through hunting and gathering, to food production, i.e., agriculture. Until recently, very little was known about this period in the Negev desert. Nahal Zahal stands to change that, with its remarkable preservation and impressive finds.

In the 2023 season of excavations, we plan to continue to expose the large structure and open a new large area, in search of more, still hidden structures.
