The Ben-Gurion University of the Negev family joins mourners the world over for Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z"l. In addition to his lengthy scholarly and rabbinic credentials, Rabbi Sacks was an honorary member of the University's Board of Governors. He was the recipient of BGU's Ladislaus Laszt Ecumenical and Social Concern Award in 2011.
"Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was an exceptional man, a world-renowned theologian, and philosopher whose aspirations for truth and mutual respect of all peoples guided his actions. His leadership was one of tolerance and hope. His perennial optimism allowed him to brilliantly advance Jewish values in the Anglo-Jewish community and British society as a whole," BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz wrote to the family. "Rabbi Lord Sacks was an honorary member of Ben-Gurion University's Board of Governors and recipient of our Ladislaus Laszt Ecumenical and Social Concern Award. He was a beacon of light, a mentor, and an inspiration to this institution. His message of tolerance will continue to guide us in our endeavors to make the desert bloom."
Harold Paisner (pictured above with Rabbi Lord Sacks), Chairman and President of the Ben-Gurion University Foundation in the UK, " World Jewry, let alone the British Jewish community, has lost an outstanding and influential scholar, a remarkable exponent of Jewish moral values and an urbane, cultivated and very humane teacher. May his soul rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing for us all ז״ל ."
The Ladislaus Laszt Ecumenical and Social Concern Award "acknowledges and rewards people whose deeds reflect tolerance, hope and vision – those aspects so essential to the survival of the human race."
