The Association of University Heads held an emergency meeting on Sunday night. At the end of the meeting, they decided to suspend classes on Monday, March 27, 2023.
“We, the heads of Israel’s research universities - presidents, rectors, and administrators - will suspend all classes at Israel’s research universities starting on Monday morning, against the backdrop of the continuing legislative process that undermines the foundations of Israeli democracy and threatens its continued existence.”
“We call on the government and the members of the coalition to stop the legislative process and enter into discussions immediately in order to draft legislation that has widespread acceptance,” the committee said.
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz, “There are moments in the life of a nation where there is no room for private interests, but only what is best for the state and the nation. We chose the dramatic step of suspending studies at all the universities in the hope that it will stop the steep descent and encourage all of our elected officials to sit down together instead, to discuss and create an agreed-upon plan of action. We only have one nation, one democratic state, and one shared future.”
“There comes a time in the history of a people or a person or an organization when you have to stand up and be counted,” he concludes.
