BGU's Joyce and Irving Goldman Medical School will increase the number of students matriculating from 90 to 120 this coming school year which begins on Sunday. BGU is implementing a government decision to increase the number of medical students to offset a slow decline in the number of active doctors.

Prof. Amos Katz, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, noted that three years ago the number of places was increased from 75 to 90, such that in the last five years the number of medical students increased from 75 to 120.

According to University estimates, nearly 20,000 students will be studying at BGU this year across all its campuses in Beer-Sheva, Sede Boqer and Eilat. That number is essentially unchanged from last year, bucking the trend of decreasing enrollment in universities.

However, many programs saw increased interest from potential students and increased enrollment, especially in the Humanities.
