Department of Mechanical Engineering
Faculty of Engineering Sciences

My life before BGU:

I was born in Tel Aviv and grew up in Herzliya. I got my bachelor’s degree, followed by a direct track PhD, in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel Aviv University. I spent my first postdoc at the Department of Physics of Complex Systems at the Weizmann Institute of Science, and then went to the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich, in Switzerland, funded by a Rothschild Fellowship.

Why BGU?

Ben-Gurion University is a leading research institution, with outstanding people and a great atmosphere.

My research:

I study the movement of the liquids and gases that surround us, a field that is called fluid mechanics. The key part of my research deals with phenomena where the flow through time and space is chaotic – what is called turbulent flow. Although this state of flow is quite common, both in our environment and in many industrial processes, our understanding of it and our ability to predict or model it is very limited. All the same, since turbulent flow drives numerous processes in a range of fields – from the formation of clouds in the atmosphere, through the movement of air pollution, to the transportation of plankton in the oceans – it is vital that we make progress in understanding this subject. Therefore, my research involves developing and implementing methods of experimentation using statistical tools that can advance our knowledge of these phenomena.

An insight from my research:

The results are not always what was expected, but this is what makes research interesting.

Something that doesn't appear on my CV:

I bake bread as my hobby, and before embarking on my academic career, I was into sailing.
