BGU and the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday to collaborate on cyber security and artificial intelligence research. The agreement emerged from a series of joint research projects between BGU's Prof. Yaron Wolfsthal and Bristol's Prof. Dimitra Simeonidou.

The two have conducted a number of research projects together on an ad hoc basis. Now, the objective of this agreement is to enhance, encourage, and formalize scholarly and scientific interaction between the institutions through the promotion of exchange opportunities for academic staff, professional staff and students and through the encouragement of cooperative activities.
The agreement was signed on behalf of BGU by Rector Prof. Chaim Hames.
Prof. Limor Aharonson-Daniel, BGU's Vice President for Global Engagement, who accompanied Prof. Hames, said: "The envisaged modes of cooperation will include activities such as bidding for joint research projects, organizing joint lectures and seminars, exchanging students, faculty and staff, facilitating assisting and developing other academic activities that may be of joint interest."
British Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan said: "This groundbreaking research collaboration between two outstanding universities positions the UK and Israel at the leading edge of cyber security and AI research world-wide, and reaffirms the close connection between British and Israeli academic communities."
Prof. Wolfsthal is a senior faculty member in the Department of Software and Information Systems Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at BGU. He is also the founder and Head of IBM's Cyber Security Center of Excellence in Beer-Sheva. Bristol's Prof. Simeonidou is a specialist in high performance networks, data centre networking, software defined networking and Smart City infrastructures.
