H.E. Carlos Chaves-Taffur (pictured below left), the Peruvian ambassador to Israel, visited Ben-Gurion University of the Negev on Wednesday to discuss launching academic collaborations with Peruvian universities. It was his first visit to BGU.
“Northern Peru has a climate much like that of Beer-Sheva,“ he told BGU Rector Prof. Chaim Hames, “A lot of desert with little water. We want to explore collaborations surrounding those issues and others.”
Prof. Hames noted that BGU had just established the School of Sustainability and Climate Change to make interdisciplinary collaborations easier and smoother. BGU has been researching the water-food-energy nexus for more than 50 years, primarily through the Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research in Sde Boker.
“After solidifying our local and regional impact, we are looking to increase our international impact. We want to increase our global presence to do good and make things better for humankind,” Prof. Hames said.
The two agreed to begin the process of exploring how BGU could collaborate with Peruvian universities.
