The Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and Ben Marandy Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building was dedicated last week during the 46th Board of Governors Meeting. In addition, the Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and Ben Marandy Chair in Quantum Physics and Nanotechnology was inaugurated and bestowed on Prof. Ron Folman.
Moderator Dr. Sigal Abramovich noted that the unique multidisciplinary nature of the building was already yielding interesting research collaborations. She has a lab in the new building.
President Prof. Rivka Carmi added that the new building was critical for laboratory space for new recruits as well as cutting edge researchers. “We could not recruit new faculty without having laboratory and office space for them,” she said.
Turning to Ruth and Ben, she said, “You have been a part of the BGU family for more than 30 years. When you have friends like Ruth and Stan, and now Ruth and Ben, you don’t get jealous of their other causes, you happily join in and say thank you on behalf of all of Israel.”
Ruth Flinkman-Marandy received an honorary doctorate in 2013, the same year that she and Ben joined the President’s Pillars, the giving society for the University’s most generous benefactors. She is also Southwest region campaign chairperson for AABGU.
“Almost 30 years ago, a friend introduced me to the work being done here. When I saw two atoms talking to each other – I was convinced,” Ruth said.
“We started doing scholarships and I’ve talked to students who all say the atmosphere is really warm and welcoming. I’m very pleased that we could increase our giving over the years,” she added.
Prof. Ron Folman lavished praise on Ruth and Ben and on the late Stan.
“When I first came to this university, they helped me with my vision. I could not have conducted my research without the nanofabrication facility and the clean rooms.
“It is quite rare to meet people who are generous with their money, their time and their hearts,” he said.
Turning to Ruth and Ben, he said, “you are such a charming couple and I wish you many more years of health, happiness, and love.”
