Department of Sociology and Anthropology
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
My life before BGU:
I was born and grew up
in the city of Shfar’am. I went to the University of Haifa for my BA, where I
studied education and sociology, and did an MA in sociology at Haifa as well. I
completed my doctorate in sociology at Tel Aviv University. My first postdoc
was at the Centre for Gender Studies at SOAS University of London. The second
was at the Dept. of Sociology at Tel Aviv University and the third and final
postdoc was at BGU’s Hubert H. Humphrey Center for Social Research.

My research
I am interested in studying the effects of social transformations over time in women’s education and labor patterns on family structures, as well as family behavior patterns, and the status of women in societies that are still characterized as being patriarchal and preserving gender inequality, including for example, Israel’s Arab-Palestinian society.
My research interests earned me two ISF grants: the first was to study the link between social transformations in Arab society and the rise in divorce rates. The second was for a study of women’s integration into local government in Israel and their ability to generate change. Another study that has received attention is of mixed Arab and Jewish marriages in Israel.
Why BGU?
My relationship with BGU began with my postdoc at the Humphrey Centre, where I enjoyed two fascinating years of academic exchanges that enriched my academic knowledge. Moreover, I discovered a university with a unique atmosphere and setting. After being invited to the Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology seminar, I became acquainted with the department's supportive, sympathetic and inspiring faculty members, who made me eager to join it as a colleague.
An insight from my research:
One insight is that social processes and changes cannot be viewed separately from the economic and political context in which they take place.
A source of inspiration:
My late father was a significant figure in my life. I was also greatly influenced by my exposure at a young age to the writings of the Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi.
When I grow up:
I always said that I wanted to be a researcher and university professor.
