The water resources specialization involves the study of the hydrosphere, in particular the investigation of the hydrology of streams, the vadose zone and groundwater, which includes modeling of water fluxes and contaminant transport in these environments. Research topics include the characterization of aquifers and groundwater flow patterns, contaminant transport in complex aquifer systems, the flow and transport of water and solutes in the unsaturated zone, the water vapor and gas exchange between groundwater, the vadose zone and the atmosphere, nanoparticles and colloid movements in soil and groundwater, and the regional and cross-boundary modeling of groundwater resources, as well as decision support system models for optimal water resource utilization.
