A BGU research team, led by Prof. Shlomi Arnon (pictured right) from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is working on the development of a breakthrough method to detect breast cancer using quantum technologies. The team is at the head of a global consortium, which includes scientists from Austria, Germany and Italy. Prof. Arnon's team was recently awarded a prestigious EU HORIZON 2020 FET research grant.

Breast cancer is one of the most widespread diseases in the modern world, and one in every eight women will be diagnosed during her lifetime. The customary methods to find and identify the illness today are radiation based, such as mammograms, CT and PET. BGU's research team has developed an innovative method based on optic and quantum technologies allowing some of the cases non-exposure to x-ray radiation.

The funding for the project, totaling €4,000,000, was awarded to the researchers through the EU's Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) OPEN program. The program supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas leading to radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support actions for such forward-looking research to prosper in Europe, and FET Innovation Launchpad Actions aiming at turning results from FET-funded projects into genuine societal or economic innovations. BGU's team is the only team in Israel to receive this prestigious grant in the current cycle.

Prof. Arnon's research group is currently seeking advanced degree students interested in becoming involved with technological research which could affect the lives of millions of people worldwide.
