Prof. Uri Ram of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology was chosen the new president of the Israeli Sociological Society at its annual conference last week in Tel Aviv.
He is a former Chair of the department and a former director of the Humphrey Institute for Social Research in BGU. He is a founding member and a member of the board of directors of the Adva Center for the Study of Inequality and Injustice in Israel. He is a graduate of the New School for Social Research in New York, and has been a visiting professor there and at New York University. He is the author of numerous scholarly publications in the fields of nationalism, collective memory, and sociology of knowledge, political sociology, globalization and sociological theory. In 2008 Ram's book The Globalization of Israel: McWorld in Tel Aviv, Jihad in Jerusalem won the Shapiro Prize for the best book of the year in Israel studies. In 2011 he was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Prize by the New School for Social Research.
He is also a member of the editorial board of Constellations: International Journal of Politics, Culture & Society.
