Prof. Haim Permuter from BGU's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the incumbent of the Luck-Hille Chair in Electrical Engineering has been awarded DIP Program funding, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The prestigious program, which was inaugurated in 1997 by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), aims to strengthen excellence in German-Israeli research cooperation (in all scientific disciplines) and to give support to innovative joint projects.

Prof. Permuter's project is one of two research projects awarded the funding which can be granted annually to candidates from seven universities in Israel. This is a multi-year plan (up to 5 years) for a total of up to €1,655,000 per project.

The research is a collaboration between BGU and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). At BGU the group includes Prof. Haim Permuter (PI) and Prof. Moshe Schwartz (Co-PI) and at TUM it includes Prof. Gerhard Kramer (PI) and Prof. Antonia Wachter-Zeh (Co-PI).

Permuter's research focuses on the foundations of sharing in modern communications networks. The project aims to contribute to three areas of shared networks: network information theory, sharing security through physical layer security (PLS), sharing codes and security codes. The study is based on the assumption that sharing is necessary for proper functioning of all future communications networks. In the future there will be many mobile terminals are small and have limited resources (batteries, antennas, etc.) to maintain their own communications, and will depend on other devices. A sharing network will provide the necessary infrastructure and intelligence for interactions to be realized.

Prof. Permuter completed his B.Sc. degree (summa cum laude) from BGU and later a doctorate from Stanford University, both in electrical engineering. He joined the Faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at BGU in 2008. He has received several awards and research grants including the Eshkol Fellowship, Wolf Award, Fulbright Fellowship, Stanford Graduate Fellowship, and Allon Fellowship.
