Ran Abutbul was awarded the Lev Margulis Prize of the Israel Society for Microscopy late last month at their annual meeting in Haifa.

He was awarded the prize for his “outstanding” doctorate ״Shape and Phase Control of Nanocrystalline π-SnS and π-SnSe – New Cubic Phases in the Tin Chalcogenide System״.

At the annual meeting, he also gave a talk about his research.

Ran Abutbul discovered new nanometric binary phases of tin sulfide and tin selenide. Binary compounds are materials composed of two elements in the periodic table. While it is common to think that all binary materials are already known, he discovered new structures of tin sulfide (SnS) and tin selenide (SnSe). The new materials have new and different properties from their old polymorphs and they are expected to be beneficial for thermoelectric and photovoltaic applications.

Abutbul is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Materials Engineering and the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology.
