Ben-Gurion University of the Negev this week signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Miami, USA, with an emphasis on promoting cooperation between the two institutions.

"The University of Miami has quickly moved into the top ranks of American universities and we have now found our Israeli counterpart," declared the president of Miami University, Prof. Donna E. Shalala, during the signing ceremony, held at BGU during the 41st Annual Board of Governors Meeting. "It is vital for our two institutions to join our minds, voices and hands in the service of our collective humanity, she said. "A lifetime dedicated to public service has taught me that education and research are the best tools for building bonds of friendship and mutual respect among peoples and nations," she added.

President of BGU Prof. Rivka Carmi responded warmly to Prof. Shalala's statement and said, "We feel much appreciated and are happy about the agreement. Prof. Shalala was a role model for me and to other women when women weren't so prevalent in positions of power."

Prof. Carmi added, "The granting of an honorary Doctorate to Prof. Shalala from Ben-Gurion University of the week was incredibly appropriate. Thank you for coming to Israel."

Prof. Shalala, a Lebanese-born American citizen, noted that Israel has always been close to her heart. She said: "My grandmother grew up in a convent in Beirut and had close friends who were Jewish. My grandmother always said that the Middle-East belongs to everyone."
