To enhance classroom study with firsthand experience, the department organizes faculty-led credit-bearing study tours to countries with a rich Islamic heritage. Preceded by a series of in-depth lectures on the relevant country's culture, politics, and history, the annual tours—consistently a highlight of the academic year—feature guided visits to sites of interest and meetings with local scholars and members of the community. Countries to which the department has led tours include Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, India, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, and Spain.
