To enhance classroom study with firsthand experience, the department organizes faculty-led credit-bearing study tours to countries with a rich Islamic heritage. Preceded by a series of in-depth lectures on the relevant country's culture, politics, and history, the annual tours—consistently a highlight of the academic year—feature guided visits to sites of interest and meetings with local scholars and members of the community. Countries to which the department has led tours include Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, India, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, and Spain.

The following are examples of tours from recent years:

The department aims to make study tours accessible to all students and covers a significant portion of the costs. Students pay a flat fee for participation, covering airfare, accommodations, ground transportation, group meals, and entrance fees, as well as the cost of a travel visa and related consular fee. For students with demonstrated financial need, the department works to subsidize or cover the participation fee.
