The Department of Cognitive and Brain Sciences

 

Purpose of the Program

The program is designed to train outstanding research students in Cognitive and Brain Sciences from a broad multidisciplinary perspective. The course offers a wide range of courses in fields, such as computability and cognition, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy of cognitive sciences.

Admission to the Program

Master's degree applicants must find a thesis supervisor before enrolling.  The supervisor can be from among faculty members of the Department of Cognitive and Brain Sciences or from among faculty members of the Zlotowski Center for Neuroscience.

Conditions for Passing from One Year to Another

The program is designed for outstanding students, and the passing grade requirement for continuing to the next year is an average grade of at least 85.

Departmental Seminar

Master's degree students are required to attend 70% of the departmental seminars in each semester.

 

Research Thesis

As noted above, Master's degree candidates may be supervised by faculty members of the Department of Cognitive and Brain Sciences or by faculty members of the School of Brain Sciences and Cognition.

Steps in Completing the Master's Degree Requirements and Towards Writing the Thesis

STEPS IN COMPLETING THE MASTER'S DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND TOWARDS WRITING THE THESIS

Before Enrolling for the Master's Degree Program

Find a supervisor and choose the subject for the thesis.

 

By the end of Semester II and no later than August 1

Submission of a research proposal approved by the supervisor.

Approval of the research proposal is a prerequisite for continuing in the program and receiving a scholarship.

Semester III

Submission of a progress report by the end of the semester.

Enroll for Course No. 197.2.9991 - 4 credits.

Semester IV

Enroll for Course No. 197.2.9992 - 4 credits.

Submission of Thesis by September 30

An Extension Beyond the Two-Year Period

A student who has submitted a request and has received approval must enroll for an additional semester. The student must enroll for writing a thesis, Course No. 197.2.7777.

Scholarship Rules

Procedure of the Academic Secretariat for Awarding Subsistence Scholarships to Research Students

 

Academic Goals for Receiving a Scholarship:

  1. Approval of the research proposal by the end of Semester I.
  2. Progress report by the end of Semester II and no later than July 31.

A student who does not meet these conditions and goals will be denied the opportunity to receive a scholarship.

Submission of a Research Proposal

The research proposal must include:

Title page including the research topic, name of the student and the supervisor.

Brief description of the methodology for conducting the research and a research plan.

List of References 

Length of the proposal:  Between three and ten pages, including appendices and bibliography, depending on the studnet's chosen discipline of research
