Lab Meetings

Every other week during the semesters, one of us presents a recent published paper and we have a discussion about it. There's coffee too....

Our Research

Our group studies the role of neurovascular dysfunction and its role in pathological brain activity and brain diseases. The Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is a unique anatomical and physiological interface between the circulation system and the CNS, designed to maintain homeostasis within the extravascular-extracellular brain environment and reserve normal brain functioning. Our research is multi-disciplinary, combining basic science and human studies: we study the role of microvascular unit and BBB integrity ןn the normal brain and in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of brain disorders such as epilepsy, stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, brain trauma and psychiatric גiseases. We develop new approaches for detection of brain and retinal damage to allow early disease prediction and intervention, and follow-up treatment efficacy.

Our Methods

10 Things About Our Lab

  • In the BBB Lab, we are studying the mechanisms underlying disturbances of brain functions in common neurological disorders.

  • We perform basic and pre-clinical research in experimental models of brain diseases (for example - stroke, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury) as well as clinical studies using brain imaging techniques in patients.

  • We use variety of methods in neuroscience, including neurophysiological recordings, intravital microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging, histopathology and molecular biology.

  • Our research is supported by national (Israel Science foundation and ministries) and international research grant (US, Germany and Europe), commercial companies and donors.

  • Basic research lead to discovery of new disease mechanisms. Pre-clinical studies are key before new therapies can be developed,.We then perform clinical research to test hypotheses developed.

  • We have research partners and close collaborations with international leaders in the field from around the globe. We encourage exchange of graduate students with our partners.

  • We present our results in national and international conferences, keeping ourselves updated with state of the art methods.

  • Our lab is perfectly located in Soroka University Medical Center. Few meters from the lab there's an animal facility and micro MRI. Few floors below us resides the MRI.

  • Once a year we have our annual lab retreat. We take some time off the lab to present the progress in our projects and have brainstorming with colleagues for the next steps. In the evening we enjoy good food and beer...

  • Our research gives hope for millions of patients with brain injuries and disabilities and their families. We strongly believe that we are on the path for novel diagnostics and therapeutics of devastating brain diseases.
