The research in my lab is focused in two main directions:
1) Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry combining the following areas: design and synthesis (structure-activity relationship), drug delivery approaches (pro-drugs), targeting and mechanistic studies and bio-analytical studies. The work centers on the relationships between chemistry and biological activity, including evaluation on different disease models.
2) Natural products combining "metabolic profile studies" and "classical natural products study" - isolation, structural characterization, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of biomedically important bioactive compounds from plant sources for drug discovery purposes.
Within this framework, I have worked – and am continuing to work – on several projects in parallel, as described below.
The development of topical and trans-dermal drug delivery systems aims to overcome the remarkably efficient barrier properties of human skin by employing non-toxic and non-irritant methods. The work includes two types of drug delivery approaches aimed to increase drug permeability into, through the skin, and into the keratinocyte cells, by using fatty acid conjugates (pro-drugs).
