Welcome to the Biostatistics and Biomedical Data Science Lab @BGU!

Our lab investigates diverse topics in epidemiology and medicine, focusing on pressing health issues that can benefit from large-scale data analysis. We leverage these data to enhance predictive accuracy and strengthen statistical power.

We currently hold several research focuses, including antimicrobial resistance, cognitive decline, and diabetes. We study various topics related to disease complications, disease management, and response to medications. We tackle a broad range of other clinical and epidemiologic disciplines, including COVID-19, environment and climate, nutrition and bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, cancer, dermatology, nephrology, and cardiology.

Our analysis combines data science algorithmics with cutting-edge methodologies in statistical modeling and causal perspective, while employing techniques such as stepwise model selection, multiple imputation, data calibration, bootstrap estimation and multiple testing adjustment.

We base our studies mainly on large-scale medical records databases of hospitalizations and clinic visits, that integrate a variety of data domains such as demographics, diagnoses, laboratory results, comorbidities, treatments and medical procedures. We also use genomics data and temporal monitoring data such as EEG.

Most of our data originates from Israeli databases of health maintenance organizations (HMO) such as Clalit and Maccabi, national databases such as Timna and Kineret, and hospitals such as Soroka, Rambam and Assuta Ashdod. We also use data from American databases, including REGARDS and MIMIC.

The lab hosts Master's and PhD students, mostly from the MD-MPH program and the Medical Data Science program in Epidemiology. We also have students under joint supervision with other departments.
