My research focuses on the political actors as mediators between civil society and the state from a path dependent historical perspective. I started with the study of the Israeli Zionist Labor movement and its multiple puzzles: the omnipotent institutions from the 1930s until 1977, the institutionalization of a bi-national economy despite its separatist national strategy, and the crucial role in inflation (when it was in the opposition) and efficiently halting it by the National Unity Government. I published then two books Split Corporatism in Israel (1991) and The Histadrut Above all (1993). Later on I attempted to decode the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict since its beginning during the pre-state period until Oslo. On this question I published Contested Memory (2000) Imagined Peace Discourse of War (2007) and Politics and Violence in Israel/Palestine (2010). Since then I am studying the relation between economic greiviances and resistance to power of different social groups – ethnic, class, national and "popular". I published a comparative research of different protest movements in Israel, Mo(ve)ments of Resistance (2013), and since 2011 I am doing a comparative research of popular resistance movements against the neo-liberal economy in different parts of the globe, including cases of political success and repressive reactions too.
