At the Graduate level, the department offers an MA Program in two principal tracks – the General Track and the Research Track ("with research thesis"). Studies at MA level include three areas of specialization - Critical Social Studies, Anthropology, and Sociology of Organizations. Each offers its own curriculum and study structure.
MA in Sociology - Critical Social Studies
MA in Sociology--Critical Social Studies is a two year program in Sociology. It is designed to teach the spectrum of critical approaches in the social sciences and train students for critical research. The research track at this program requires a total of 40 credits and includes 6 mandatory classes on advanced qualitative and qualitative methods, contemporary social theories, foundations of critical approaches, and research seminars (14 credits); these courses are designed to meet the specialization of critical studies students. Additional credit points (18 credits) are earned by attending related courses both within and outside the department. Students complete a theoretically informed and empirically based thesis which provides 8 additional credits.
MA in Anthropology
MA in Anthropology is a two year program designed to train students in the theoretical and methodological dimensions of anthropological research. The research track for this program requires a total of 42 credit points and includes 4 mandatory courses on advanced anthropological theory, anthropological method, ethnographic writing, and a research seminar (14 credits). An additional 20 credits are earned by attending related courses both within and outside the department. Students are advised to take courses relevant to their empirical research. The core MA exam is taken by students at the end of the second year and is integrated into their overall grade. Students work on their empirical research during their second year in the program and write a theoretically informed and empirically based thesis by the end of their program; this thesis provides an additional 8 credit points.
MA in Sociology of Organizations
MA in Sociology of Organizations is a two year program designed to train students in the areas of organizational theories, processes, and relationships within different types of organizations. The program emphasizes practical-applied as well as research-theoretical aspects of organizational knowledge. The research track for this program requires a total of 40 credit points and includes 5 mandatory courses on advanced qualitative and quantitative methods, contemporary theory in social sciences, organizational theory, and students’ research seminars (22 credits); students in the general track (without thesis) earn the additional 8 credits by taking applied and practical classes designed for their professional training, while students in the research track of this program are permitted to take these classes on an elective basis.
