Professor David Newman is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University. Originally from the UK, his degrees are from the University of London (QMW) 1978, and a PhD from the University of Durham (Dunelm) 1981. AT BGU since 1987, Newman was responsible for the founding of the Department of Politics and Government in 1998, and the Centre for the Study of European Politics and Society (CSEPS) in 2003. In 2013, Newman was awarded the OBE for strengthening academic and scientific links between the UK and Israel.

His work focuses on Political Geography and Geopolitics with a special emphasis on the study of borders. He has published extensively on territorial and border issues in areas of ethnic conflict with a particular emphasis on Israel/Palestine. In recent years he has focused on the theoretical and conceptual debate surrounding the role of borders in the contemporary era. From 2012-107 Newman is a member of the FP7 Euroborderscapes consortium, a major research project including 21 European and adjacent universities.

Newman is the incumbent of the University Professorial Chair in Geopolitics and was the editor of the International Journal of Geopolitics from 199-2014.

His work also deals with the interface of Science and Politics and in recent years has published on topics relating to academic freedom, academic boycotts, and the structural and political organization of academia.

In addition to his academic work, Newman is part of the public discourse and publishes a weekly op-ed column in the Jerusalem Post which deals with political, social and academic issues.
