MA Program: African Sustainable Communities

Africa is the fastest-growing region of the world. Within the next 30 years, African economies and populations will expand at a rapid pace, and cultural innovations and community aspirations will also evolve with these changes. Without awareness of Africa, we will be unable to understand and engage with the major trends that will shape all aspects of the 21st century globally. Through innovative research and teaching, the African Studies Program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is producing knowledge to help us understand this vast and fascinating continent.

The BGU African Studies Program is a leading international center for the research and study of Africa, and includes both undergraduate and graduate academic programs. All programs are based on a multidisciplinary approach that include the study of politics, history, economics, cultures, religions and more.

Our faculty are deeply passionate about researching African history, politics and cultures, and they convey their knowledge and expertise in both formal and informal academic settings. Our programs are known for moving beyond the traditional classroom setting, and using study tours, cultural events, symposiums, film screenings and activist initiatives as additional outlets for engaging with the diverse and dynamic societies of Africa.

Our students complete their studies with a deep understanding and appreciation for the complex mosaics that constitute Africa, but they are also able to think globally. By understanding Africa, students have a unique perspective on international political and economic systems, as well as cultural trends. Our graduates acquire a skill set that includes critical thinking, sensitivity to cultural nuances and differences, knowledge of international relations, and a passion for advancing mutual understanding and respect across social and political contexts. African Studies students are able to think "out of the box" and approach current issues and developments with a critical eye. At BGU, African Studies students are among the most engaged and committed students, and their impact is felt both on campus and in the community at large.
