The last few years have witnessed an enormous increase in the R&D activities related to the fields of Electro-Optics and Photonics, as these technologies find their use in answering numerous daily living needs. Such applications span a wide gamut from communications and imaging applications covering a wide range of wavelengths, through displays and medical-optics systems, to optical implementations of signal and image processing techniques. These technologies constitute a significant part of the overall spectrum of the High-Technology industry in Israel, as well as over the entire globe.

It is with these facts in mind that Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has launched a study program for a Masters Degree (M.Sc) in Electro-Optical Engineering.

Housed within the School of Engineering, the unit offers a studies program which includes optical communication, inter-processor communication, optical satellite communication, VLSI-based smart camera technology, thermal imaging, image and signal processing, optical computing, spatial light modulators and display technologies, as well as bio-medical optics.

Ben-Gurion University is the first In Israel to offer Electro-Optics study programs for higher degrees.

The Electro-Optical Engineering Unit offers six areas of specialization:

  • Imaging and Image Processing Systems;
  • Quantum Optics & Laser Technology;
  • Optical Communication;
  • Opto-Electronic Devices;
  • Optical Computing
  • Bio-Medical Optics.

The program also covers general Electro-Optical courses including optical and opto-mechanical design, non-imaging optics for light collection, and a graduate level electrooptics laboratory course.

The M.Sc students can opt for either a full research thesis or a final project track.

The unit also offers Ph.D. Studies in Electro-Optics for students with Electro-Optics or related M.Sc. degrees.
