International Program
for M.Sc. in Biotechnology Engineering
The Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering (BTE)
BTE one of the youngest departments established in the year 2000 at BGU, offers a vibrant cutting-edge research atmosphere led by 15 faculty members. The Department is situated in the modern Guzik building in a strategic place between the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanosciences and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev. The department is equipped with state of the art laboratories and research facilities supported by numerous prestigious academic funds and honored by a generous donation of the Goldstein-Goren family. BTE invests continual efforts in providing students with hands-on experience in laboratory classes that develop skills and experience in engineering in three major clusters: Medicinal Biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, Energy and Environmental Biotechnology. The broad topics of research subjects covered by BTE include: microbiology, biochemistry, genetic engineering, renewable energy, nutraceuticals, medical sciences, biological drugs, tissue engineering, stem cells and and synthetic biology. This high volume of activities is also backed up by a continuous outcome of scientific publications. Many of the Biotechnology Engineers who graduated the department over the years hold central positions in academic institutions and in the Biotech industry in Israel and around the world.
M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology Engineering
BTE offers graduate studies towards both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The M.Sc. program is carried over a period of two years (four semesters). The program is research oriented, conducted in the BTE laboratories with the guidance of our faculty members. M.Sc. studies are completed with a research thesis that summarizes the unique scientific results of the student with an oral presentation that are evaluated by a scientific committee.
Many of our M.Sc students qualify for Ph.D. studies in the prestigious Combined Track such that the M.Sc. thesis serves also as for Ph.D. candidacy evaluation.
M.Sc. Thesis
The research leading to the M.Sc. thesis is carried out during the entire two years of the studies. The student is expected to publish and present the research results in leading international journals and conferences. The thesis is evaluated through a written report and an oral examination.
Application requirements
Applicant to the M.Sc. program in BTE should hold B.Sc. degree in Biotechnology Engineering or in closely related fields at a minimum GPA of 80/100/ A TOFEL score of 85/120 or equivalent score in an internationally recognized English proficiency exam is required (waived for applicant who hold B.Sc. in a program taught in English). GRE is recommended but not required. The applicant should contact potential advisor among the BTE faculty as well as the BTE graduate office for further information.
