The Abramovich lab practice micropaleontology, while performing foraminiferal research and their use as indicators of recent and ancient marine environments. ‘Forams’ are marine unicellular protists that are found in all oceans, and are considered among the most ancient and abundant fossils and most efficient rock builders. Being unicellular organisms with a short reproductive cycle and fast growth rates, they quickly respond to environmental change and therefore they are extremely sensitive indicators of diverse environmental conditions. The Abramovich lab combines paleontological, biological and geochemical tools. Recently, they embarked on utilizing molecular genomics tools which enable robust taxonomic subdivision of foraminifera, but also provide deeper understanding of their environments and enhance the accuracy of their usage as bioindicators. Such genomics techniques are currently employed by the Abramovich lab to investigate the large scale Lessepsian invasion of foraminiferal species from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean basin.
