My research focuses on the interface between the vadose zone and the atmosphere by combining fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and theoretical concepts using various sensing systems. I believe a holistic approach is needed to understand further the temporal and spatial distributions of water quality and quantity. My research integrates fundamental hydrological studies at multiple spatial and temporal scales by developing “easy to use” sensor arrays. The goal is to advance scientific knowledge of hydrological and biogeochemical processes at various scales and utilize creative and straightforward instrumentation.
Specific research interests include:
1. Emerging methods for sustainable groundwater management.
2. Spatial distribution of gas transport mechanisms at the Earth-atmosphere boundary. We are explicitly improving our understanding of the role of atmospheric conditions (rain, temperature, near-surface wind, and barometric pressure) and surface/subsurface properties (soils and water bodies) on gas transport to the atmosphere.
3. Digital Water – open-source, low-cost sensors for quantifying environmental processes. Open-source sensors are a new and emerging field of interest in ecological studies. These sensors are pivotal for measuring environmental parameters that capture process-related heterogeneity.
