Title: Challenges in opportunistic use of  data from communication networks

Zoom Link

Abstract:

In 2006 we have first shown that existing measurements of the signal level in wireless cellular networks can be used for near-ground rain monitoring. As such, each wireless communication link can be considered as an opportunistic sensor, continuously collecting data about the environment. In this talk, I will present the concept of oIoT - opportunistic Internet of things - focusing on its use for environmental monitoring. While its benefit for society, and in particular in developing country is evident, the challenges of this technology are considerable, mostly about the access to the data. Besides the solvable technical issues, these challenges involve questions about ownership, private-public partnership, privacy, and more. Focusing on data from cellular networks, I will review different models suggested for dealing with getting access to data and will present an alternative approach to do so.
