The Department of Clinical Biochemistry & Pharmacology is
comprised of two joint academic departments: The Department of Clinical
Biochemistry and The Department of Pharmacology. The Department of
Clinical Biochemistry, established in 1973, was one of the first
departments formed by the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University
of the Negev (BGU). It is from these early days that the Clinical Biochemistry
Unit, and later the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, evolved as an academic
research department committed to producing state-of-the-art biochemical
research, often in close collaboration with clinicians from various departments
in Soroka University Medical Center, pursuing excellence in teaching and
spearheading novel teaching methodologies; the department teaches in all
schools of the Faculty, including School of Laboratory Medicine, School of
Medicine, School of Nursing and advanced graduate degrees. In addition to
academic research and teaching activities, most of the faculty members of the
Department of Clinical Biochemistry head the various routine laboratories at
Soroka University Medical Center, providing an important service to the
community in the detection, diagnosis, treatment, prevention of disease and cutting-edge
clinical research.
The accomplishments of the Department over the years have turned
it into a bona fide center of academic excellence, and placed it in multiple
leadership positions within the Medical School at BGU, and in Soroka University
Medical Center.
In 2012 the highly regarded Department of
Pharmacology joined the Department of Clinical
Biochemistry to form the Department of Clinical Biochemistry
& Pharmacology.
Among the important contributions that the Department of Clinical
Biochemistry & Pharmacology offers to Ben-Gurion University of the
Negev and to Soroka University Medical Center are:
• Basic and Clinical Research
• Teaching towards all academic degrees
• Clinical Services
