My research interest is on development of advanced building materials, focused on:
High-performance cement and concrete composites and particularly textile reinforced concrete (TRC) including advanced processing, bonding, durability and micro and nano structure of those materials. The TRC development aims at two levels: (i) replacing the conventional steel reinforced concrete by carbon fabrics, (ii) strengthening and retrofitting of concrete elements. The use of TRC potentially reduces concrete element self-weight, energy consumption, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and it can be used to produce structures with modular and complex shapes while eliminating the risk of corrosion.

Development of alternative building materials to cement, including geopolymer and hemp-based concrete. Lime-hemp concrete (LHC) is a new environmentally friendly construction material composed of hemp shives and a lime binder, allowing combination of energy efficiency with low environmental impact. Our research focuses on replacing the lime, at least partly, with alternative unfired binders such as clay for further embodied carbon (EC) and embodied energy (EE) savings.

Development of nano-based new building materials with addition of nanomaterials such as graphene and nanotubes.

My research lab instrumentations include: a closed loop uniaxial INSTRON test system rated up to 100 kN for tension, acoustic emission set up, compression and bending tests of materials and composite elements, and isothermal calorimeter (TAM Air by AS Instruments).
