New educational project at the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research (ZIWR)

The Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research (BIDR)

The Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research (ZIWR) attributes great importance to the connection between the academy and the community, and therefore invests time and resources in various outreach programs, from elementary to high schools, in the region. They recently launched the 'Drop in the Desert' program; exposing high school students from the Bedouin communities around ZIWR to academia. The goal of the program is introducing the participants to the scientific work and its contribution to issues related to water and the environment. They consider this unique program, an excellent platform to bring together the local academic community (students and researchers), the school students and their communities.

This year, participants were students from 10th and 11th grades in the Neve-Midbar high school in Nitzana and the ORT high school in Bir Hadaj. Work was carried out in small groups under the guidance of students from ZIWR. The program included basic principles of laboratory work as well as practical experimental work. The results will be submitted as a research project by the students.

Recently they held at BGU's Sede Boqer campus, a summarizing event, in which the students presented their works on posters. Many parents and staff members arrived, from both high schools and from the ZIWR.

A taste of the hard work and the good atmosphere can be seen in the photos:
