Title: Audio Analysis in Medicine

Zoom Link

Abstract:

The stethoscope, which was invented 200 years ago, can be regarded as the first non-invasive instrument that has given us a greater ability to examine the internal structure and function of the human body in health and disease. Till today the stethoscope is massively used mostly to examine heart and lung sounds.

Recently, audio analysis is getting more attention in medicine, especially because of the advances in audio acquisition technology, communication, and new analysis methods. In addition to lung and heart sounds, blood pressure is measured using Korotkoff sounds, speech is recorded and analyzed in various physiological and psychological conditions, cough monitoring is becoming more popular, and snoring sounds are detected using smartphones.

In this lecture, three research projects in medical audio analysis, that are taking place in the Biomedical Signal Processing Research Lab. (BGU) will be presented: 1) Breathing sounds analysis for sleep disorder diagnosis, 2) speech signal analysis for autism severity estimation in children, and 3) cough and speech analysis for COVID-19 screening.

With this approach of audio analysis, remote medicine may become more feasible and accessible, especially in these times of a pandemic.
