May the year and its curses end, and may the new year and its blessings begin. Soon, it will be the Jewish New Year, and this is an excellent opportunity to wish everyone a happy and healthy Rosh HaShana. In addition, I wish everyone a year full of fruitful research and academic accomplishments. Our faculty members’ achievements during the past few months are detailed in this newsletter, adding to the already significant number of successes over the last year. The number of students at the institute has increased, as well as the quantity and quality of research grants we were able to obtain. I am convinced that this trend will continue and that in the upcoming academic year, which is right around the corner, these figures will even improve. This year, for the first time, the Shanghai Ranking published rankings of research universities according to the academic subject of agricultural sciences. In this ranking, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev reached the prestigious position of among the top 201–300 institutions in the world. Many people criticize these indices and the methods by which they are calculated. Still, I hope that in the coming years, we will be able to see an upward trend that reflects the world-changing work of our institute in the field of agriculture. During the last year, I also managed the Even-Ari farm, which is located near the Nabatean city of Avdat. Throughout the year, we made several improvements to the farm, and now, plants can be grown there under controlled irrigation. In addition, we renewed the measurement of the streams that allow rainwater harvesting. The house on the farm has undergone renovation and can currently be used for group meetings or concentrated writing days. The farm is waiting for you, and if you are interested in doing research there, please contact me to coordinate.
