February 2024

From the Director
Our institute continues to promote the vision of developing sustainable agrotechnologies that are suitable for arid conditions. We believe that the technologies we develop here, in our harsh conditions, will help other arid regions, as well as regions experiencing desertification processes. To fulfill this vision, we continue to recruit promising young researchers. This year, Dr. Gilad Gabay, who comes to us from the University of California, Davis, joined the institute. Gilad will build his laboratory soon, and he is looking for graduate students and a technician. In addition, we also continue to search for new researchers and, currently, have two open calls. Links to these calls can be found at the bottom of the newsletter. We are making every effort to bring the best researchers here and need your help in publishing these calls.
This semester was very different due to the war our country is fighting, sparked by Hamas’s attack of October 7. It also started very late to allow as many soldiers as possible to participate in the courses and was shortened due to additional constraints. Even so, I think the students received most of the material, and we should view the glass as half full. In the semester break, which is just around the corner, each of us will have the opportunity to promote our research and support the students so that they can perform well in their exams, despite the shortened semester.
As you will see below in the newsletter, the institute's retirees continue to be very active researchers. They also continue to obtain research funds and publish manuscripts. This is a great privilege that we enjoy as an institute for a variety of reasons. We will, of course, continue to provide the institute's retirees with the infrastructure that will allow them to succeed in promoting the institute's vision. I also want to wish all the retirees good health and continued fruitful and groundbreaking research.
Best,
Naftali
