As a famous Israeli song says, the wheat is growing again. This song expresses hope for the future and describes the continuity of the world with all its goodness, despite the loss caused by wars. I sincerely hope that all the hostages will soon return to their families and that they too will be able to see the wheat growing again. In addition, I very much hope that all the residents of the south and the north will return to their homes and that the reconstruction of these areas will be rapid. I truly believe that agriculture has enormous value beyond food production. Agriculture offers environmental and scenic benefits, land conservation opportunities, and job creation. In order for agriculture to contribute to societal well-being and not be an impediment, the application of inputs must be optimally managed. In arid and semi-arid regions, this is even more important due to the sensitivity of the soil and the lack of precipitation.
The institute's researchers continue to receive significant funds from research foundations. You can see the list below. Restoring arid soils with cyanobacteria, synchronizing the flowering of almond trees to increase yields, breeding wheat to adapt to a changing climate, and breeding pitaya to maximize phytonutrient content are just some of the scientific aims of the institute's researchers. We continue to recruit outstanding students to our innovative study programs. This academic year began with 96 master's and doctoral students and 11 postdocs. The current master's degree program at the International School of Desert Studies offers study in the following majors: Agriculture and Biotechnology of Drylands, Irrigation and Plant Environment, Agroinformatics, and Environmental and Aquatic Microbiology. These MSc programs combine research work under the guidance of the institute's researchers and interesting and enriching courses that expand the students' toolboxes. All of this takes place on a uniquely beautiful campus that includes excellent dormitories and a supportive international environment.
