Overview
The Department of Clinical Biochemistry, established in 1973, was one of the first departments formed by the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University (BGU). The school of Medicine was established as part of an alliance between the university and the Clalit Health Fund which runs the Soroka Medical Center. It is from these early days that the Clinical Biochemistry Unit, and later the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, evolved as an academic department committed to producing state-of-the-art biochemical research often in close collaboration with clinicians from various departments in the Hospital, pursuing excellence in teaching by creating novel teaching methodologies In addition to academic research and teaching duties, most of the faculty members of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry head the various routine laboratories at Soroka University Medical Center, providing an important service to the community in the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. The larger clinical laboratories perform an extensive and diverse amount of diagnostic tests, while the smaller and more specialized laboratories, alongside routine laboratory testing, also concentrate on developing sophisticated techniques for diagnosing specific diseases. The accomplishments of the Department over the years have turned it into a bona fide center of academic excellence, and placed it in multiple leadership positions within the Medical School at BGU, and in the Soroka Academic Medical Center. Among the important contributions the Department of Biochemistry offers to Ben Gurion University and the Soroka Academic Medical Center are: • Research • Teaching • Clinical Services
