The German summer program, the "Internationale Sommeruniversität", offered by the Overseas Students Program (OSP) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), gives German speakers an opportunity to participate in a Hebrew language Ulpan, along with a lecture series focused on Israel and Jewish studies. While most lectures are in Germen, a select few are also offered in English.

The Overseas Students Programs (OSP), part of the Office of International Academic Affairs is proud to celebrate the program's 20th anniversary this year. The program is host to some of Israel's leaders in academia, politics and culture.

The program will host three guest lecturers and two movie screenings throughout the month of August.

We welcome BGU staff and students to lectures and films which offer thought-provoking perspectives on a variety of  topics. The films will include English subtitles and the lectures and interviews will be delivered in English.

Dr. Susan Hattis Rolef
The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict - a History of Solutions

Dr. Susan Hattis Rolef was born in Haifa in 1943 to parents who made Aliya from Chicago in 1932. She received her PhD in International Relations from the Institute for Higher International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and taught International Relations at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Rolef retired from the Knesset in 2010 after more than 30 years in the political arena, and now writes a weekly column in The Jerusalem Post. She is currently completing a book on the job of being a Knesset Member.

The Cakemaker (2017):Thomas, a young and talented German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who dies in a car crash. Thomas travels to Jerusalem seeking answers. Keeping his secret for himself, he starts working for Anat, his lover's widow, who owns a small café. Although not fully kosher and despised by the religious, his delicious cakes turn the place into a city attraction. Finding himself involved in Anat's life in a way far beyond his anticipation, Thomas will stretch his lie to a point of no return.

The Justice System in Israel

Dan Meridor is an Israeli politician. As a longtime member of the Likud party, Meridor served in various ministerial positions. As Minister of Justice in the years 1988-92, he promoted the adoption of two Basic Laws dealing with human rights, which led to what is known in Israel as "The constitutional revolution".

Meridor was a leading force in the ratification of five international treaties on human rights by the state of Israel. In the late 1990s he became one of the founders of the Centre Party. In 2014, Meridor succeeded Avi Primor as president of the Israel Council on Foreign Relations, an institute of international affairs which operates under the auspices of the World Jewish Congress.

Anywhere Else (2013): "A movie starring Neta Riskin, Golo Euler, and Hana Laslo. You left your home to move far away. You were struck by a wing of change and were unfaithful to yourself. You reinvented yourself and you are now feeling free. But suddenly pressure arises in you." Anywhere Else is a c-production of Babelberg KONRAD WOLF Film University and Dirk Manthey Filmproduktion in Hamburg. The film was funded by Medienbord Berlin-Brandenburg and served as a graduation film for Esti Amrami and many students on her team.

Henriette Dahan Kalev is a professor emerita at BGU, in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her lectures focus on feminism and women, along with, the role ethnicity and culture play in Middle Eastern, as well as global, politics. Henriette has published several articles relating to gender and ethnicity in politics, along with a book titled Gender, Sex, Politics. Her recent book is on women and resistance titled Women in the Wilderness
