​​Dr. Yaniv Belhassen, Department of Hotel & Tourism Management in the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management GGFBM, is one of five recipients of the BGU Toronto Prize 2014, which will be awarded at the Rector’s Concert in June Dr. Belhassen, senior lecturer on the BGU Eilat campus at the GGFBM Hotel and Tourism Management Department, teaches courses on cultural tourism, the sociology of tourism, principles of management studies, and critical management. His research interests span over two main areas: (1) the socio-cultural aspects of tourism as an industry and as a social practice, conducting conducted research on drug tourism, evangelical pilgrimage tourism, urban tourism, and substance use and abuse among hotel staff. (2) philosophical questions relating to the development and establishment of tourism studies as an academic field, including a line of research and involvement in projects on the epistemology of tourism scholarship and on pedagogical research projects, such as the need for critical pedagogy on management education in tourism programs, and on food ethics education in culinary art programs.
 
Selected by a committee headed by the Vice-President and Dean for Research and Development Prof. Moti Herskowitz, this prize in excellence for young scholars (under 40) was created by the Toronto Chapter of the Canadian Associates of BGU to honor the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel and has been awarded annually since 1998.

The Department of Hotel and Tourism Management is a core part of the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management since its establishment at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The vanguard of hotel and tourism research and studies in Israel, the Department is the only one offering BA, MA and PhD degrees in this field.
