Conservation Genetics: genetic Diversity as a goal and a tool in

conservation biology

Conservation genetics is a rapidly growing field that combines principles from population genetics, molecular biology, ecology and evolution and aims to minimize the loss of genetic diversity and prevent species extinction.  During 1980s-1990s it was strongly debated whether genetic factors play an important role in species extinction. However, the accumulated evidence indicates that genetic factors have a significant impact on species extinction. Hence, a major goal in conservation biology is to maintain genetic diversity in order to assure the evolutionary potential of species and their ability to adapt to changing environments. In this symposium, we will discuss how we can use genetic and genomic tools in order to understand species biology as a basis for their protection and how we can minimize the loss of genetic diversity and hence the risk of species extinction.
