From the Desk of Ben-Gurion University President Prof. Rivka Carmi

22 Dec' 2016
Dear Friends,

It has been a busy and exciting few months here at BGU. We dedicated the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Institute for Social Leadership Building with our dear friend Mort. I have no doubt that this inspiring institute will become a model for other universities. Adding to our unique capabilities, we launched the Center for Israel Studies thanks to the Azrieli Foundation and Danna Azrieli honored us with her thoughtful words at the ceremony in Sede Boqer. There has never been a more urgent need for such a center in the face of those who would demonize Israel.

We continue to honor Ben-Gurion's vision by recognizing outstanding individuals on Ben-Gurion Day every year. This year, the ceremony was especially moving.

One of the elements of the University's success lies in international partnerships and recognition for our faculty both in Israel and abroad. BGU launched new collaborations in Canada and India and several of our faculty won prestigious awards for their groundbreaking research. We are proud of our faculty, students and staff who pursue excellence every day.

As we head into the holiday season, may we bring warmth and light to each other at gatherings of family and friends. It is especially apropos at this time of year to thank all of you for your support - who keep the BGU torch burning fiercely and proudly.

In a moving ceremony filled with song and laughter, BGU recognized an academic, two activists, one author, a musician, a politician and one academic-politician-activist.

We thanked them for their service and charged them to continue their extraordinary efforts on behalf of humanity.

By honoring distinguished personages, we urge them to uphold Ben-Gurion's legacy and realize his vision for the Negev and for Israel.

This beautiful building will house the first-of-its-kind Mandel Social Leadership MBA Program and future executive programs.

One of the interesting aspects of this building is that a time capsule was included in its construction to be opened in 50 years.

Thank you to our dear partners - Danna Azrieli and Offi Zisser of the Azrieli Foundation of Canada and Israel - for making this essential historical, sociological and policy-advising center a reality.

The Hebrew Culture and Israel and World Jewry laboratories were launched this year, with another three laboratories to follow in the coming years.

On behalf of the entire University, wishing you and your families a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!
