Prof. Smadar Cohen of the Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering has been named as one of the winners of The Mifal Hapais ‘Michael Landau Prize’ for the Sciences and Research for 2016.

The prize is awarded to researchers who have achieved a breakthrough in the field of their research, and have earned international recognition. Every year 8 prizes are awarded in the various fields, which change annually.

Prof. Cohen has developed a revolutionary scaffolding out of an algae-based material that will greatly assist the heart’s recovery after a heart attack.

Additional 2016 recipients include Prof. Avi Levy, Prof. Avraham Novershtern in the sciences and Dudi Ben-Zeev, Dori Parnes, Yaakov Biton and Anisa in the performing arts.

The prize ceremony will be held in February 2017.

The Landau Foundation was established in 1970 and is named for Dr. Michael Landau, who was the head of Mifal Hapais during its early years, and who served in this position for twenty years, during which time he determined the directions that Mifal Hapais would take, and planned its ‘modus operandi’. The Landau Prize has been given annually since 2000 to scientists and performers.
