A junior high school class from Maale Adumim, mentored by Prof. Itzhak Mizrahi, won the national Space Lab Competition on Monday. The competition sends science experiments into space through the support in Israel of the Ilan Ramon Foundation. It is part of NASA’s global activities.

Ramon Space Lab is a program for gifted junior high school students, which gives them the unique opportunity to send a science experiment to the international space station.

The winning experiment focuses on transferring horizontal genes via bacteria (bacterial evolution in space), which is Prof. Mizrahi’s main area of expertise. Mizrahi is a member of BGU’s Department of Life Sciences.

The winning class will be flown to Houston this coming April, where the experiment will be flown to the space station.

“We are all very satisfied with this result,” Prof. Mizrahi said with a smile.
