The National Student Union honored the top 12 of 57 lecturers who comprised their ‘Inspiring’ list for 2016 on Tuesday. Among those 57 were five from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, including a lecturer who was one of the top 12.  

The project was launched in July, drawing inspiration, as well as methodologies, from the “Teaching Hero” project launched in Ireland.  

The survey was distributed online to anyone who wanted to fill it out. 1,864 responses were received which included a 150 word statement as to why they found this academic staff member inspiring. The surveys were then ranked in order to determine the top 57. 

Here are the 5 BGU lecturers who made the list: 

Dr. Eyal Gur– one of the top 12
Life Sciences
Courses: Microbiology, Genetics of Bacteria and Bio-Molecule Interactions

Praise from students: “He reveals groundbreaking research and shows researchers’ brilliant thought processes. His lectures are fascinating – tough topics suddenly become easy and thanks to him we like the material. Every lesson has a value added component, we learn to develop scientific and independent thinking.”

 

Prof. Dorit Tubin
Dept. of Education, Chair
Courses: Intro to the Sociology of Education, Projects in Education, and Fields and Institutions in Education

Praise from students: “She inspires us and makes us think about life differently. We don’t take her course just for the grade, but because we really want to learn. She holds discussions that trigger our critical thinking through humor and cynicism. Her lectures are fun.”

 

Prof. Dani Filc
Politics and Government
Courses: Intro to Israeli Politics, Comics and Politics, The End of a Dream: Communist Ideology, Politics and Culture

Praise from students: “An amazing and knowledgeable lecturer. He is full of passion for teaching, encourages questions and other viewpoints and immediately answers patiently. Moreover, he is an amazing person, always cheerful and goes out of his way to help his students, he understands us. In addition, he is a social activist and even joins the student causes.”

 

Dr. Iddo Nevo
Politics and Government
Courses: Intro to Politics and Government, Changes in Israeli Politics and Society, Sport and Politics in Israel and the World, Culture Wars in Israel

Praise from students: “A fascinating and charismatic lecturer, uncommonly smart, who encourages his students to think outside the box and gives them creative tasks. What he teaches will stay with us our whole lives. It is just fun to be in his lectures and if only there were more like him.”
