BGU post-doctoral research fellow Dr. Leonardo I. Martínez Sandoval achieved the highest distinction for young scientists during the conference “Discrete and Computational Geometry, 30 Years Later”.

The prestigious mathematical research journal Discrete and Computational Geometry (DCG) celebrated its 30th anniversary with a scientific conference held at Monte Verità, Ascona, Switzerland from June 27 to July 1st.

The talks given during the conference were by invitation only. The program included a special contest of six talks given by outstanding young researchers in the field. One of them was Dr. Martínez who is currently a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.  He talked about one of his topics of research: “A Hall-type theorem for points in general position”.

The work presented by Dr. Martínez was selected by the academic jury of the event to receive the “Award for best contribution”, the highest distinction possible. The Award was presented by Dr. Janos Pach, editor-in-chief of DCG, and by Dr. Chiara Cometta, the administrative director of Centro Stefano Franscini.

Dr.  Martínez’s interest in mathematical research began in the Mexican Mathematical Olympiad. He completed his undergraduate studies in Mathematics in the Faculty of Sciences of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). In January 2016, he finished his PhD studies in a joint program of UNAM in Mexico and Université de Montpellier in France. During his PhD studies, he participated in various activities in the promotion of mathematics. He joined the Department of Computer Science at BGU this past April, where he is a postdoctoral research fellow under the supervision of Dr. Natan Rubin.
