A new book announced by Springer International Publishing,Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East” showcases BGU's important role in the field of substance abuse.

The book, co-edited by Prof. Isralowitz, Director of the BGU Regional Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research (RADAR) Center, at the Spitzer Department of Social Work and Prof. Patricia Findley of Rutgers University and a BGU RADAR Center Senior Fulbright Scholar, describes innovative intervention programs including those supported by the US  Agency for International Development – Middle East Regional Cooperation. Prof. Isralowitz is a US National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) “Distinguished International Scientist” and has received NIDA recognition for his contributions to diplomacy through collaborative research.

This ambitious resource describes new intervention programs for treating substance abuse and other mental health problems in the Middle East in the context of larger issues in the region. Deftly combining clinical acumen with in-depth knowledge of sociopolitical currents, contributors present data and analysis on similarities and differences within the region, addiction and mental health issues in special populations (youth, mothers, immigrants), and the efficacy of local and international initiatives.

For health psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and addiction counselors, “Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East” demonstrates the deep potential for mental health and social issues to be addressed to benefit all communities involved.
