The International Society for Applied Phycology has bestowed on Prof. Sammy Boussiba their Distinguished Applied Phycologist Award at their 5th Congress last month in Sydney, Australia. Phycology is the study of algae.

The award was given “for his continued and outstanding contributions to this field of science.”
Boussiba is the director of the French Associates Institute for Agriculture and Biotechnology of Drylands, part of the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research. He is also the head of the Landau Family Microalgal Biotechnology Laboratory.

Boussiba is a member of a committee appointed by the American National Academy of Sciences, to examine "Sustainable Development of Algal Biofuels". 

He is also vice president/outgoing president of the International Society for Applied Phycology.
